This ceremony responds to the cultural and community need to welcome a child into the family. In Western culture this ceremony dates back to Ancient Greek and Roman times when a child was not recognized as a member of the family until the Naming was performed.
A Naming ceremony is not a baptism or christening but is sometimes referred to as a ‘secular christening’.
The ceremony may be conducted by a respected friend or relative or a celebrant.
Appointment of Godparents or Mentors often accompanies the Name Giving Ceremony.
